Things to do in Foothill Ranch: Canyon Trails and a Small Historic Park
Foothill Ranch is a neighborhood of Lake Forest. A plain guide to Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, Heritage Hill and other public places close by.

Foothill Ranch is a master-planned neighborhood in the city of Lake Forest. It was finished in 1996 and joined Lake Forest in 2000. It covers about 2.8 square miles and sits against the hills at the city's northeastern edge.
It is mostly homes and offices, so it has few sights of its own. What it does have is a wilderness park right next door, and a small historic park in Lake Forest.
Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park
This is the reason to go outdoors here. Whiting Ranch is an OC Parks wilderness park of about 2,500 acres, in the eastern part of Lake Forest, close to Foothill Ranch.
The land is a mix of oak woodland canyons with streams, rolling grassy hills, and steep slopes of coastal sage scrub and chaparral. Three streams flow through it part of the year: Borrego, Serrano and Aliso Creek. The park is best known for Red Rock Canyon, a canyon of striking rock formations. You can also see traces of the old ranching days.
There are 23 trails, about 17 miles in all. Some are graded roads and some are single track. Hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders share the park, though some paths, such as Red Rock Canyon and Billy Goat, are for hikers only. The park links to other OC Parks trails, including the Aliso Creek system.
The park has two parking areas, one reached from Portola Parkway and the other from Glenn Ranch Road, so you can pick the end that is closer to you. Its streams support a lot of wildlife, so bring binoculars. Trails can close for up to three days after rain.
Heritage Hill Historical Park
Heritage Hill, in Lake Forest, is a 4.1 acre park run by OC Parks. It keeps four restored buildings from different times in the Saddleback Valley's past: the Serrano Adobe from about 1863, the El Toro Grammar School of 1890, St. George's Episcopal Mission of 1891, and the Harvey Bennett Ranch House of 1908.
The buildings can be entered only on scheduled tours, to protect the furnishings, but you can walk the grounds on your own. The site also includes Ritchie's Park, a natural area along Aliso Creek where the Bennett children once found Native American artifacts.
Lake Forest Sports Park
Lake Forest Sports Park and Recreation Center covers about 86 acres and opened in 2014. Lake Forest also has a public skatepark of more than 40,000 square feet. Both are good for active kids.
Lake Forest's name and trees
The city's name comes from two man-made lakes and a man-made eucalyptus forest that Dwight Whiting planted in the early 1900s.
For families
Walk a short, easy stretch of trail at Whiting Ranch and look for Red Rock Canyon.
Tour Heritage Hill's old buildings and look for the schoolhouse.
Bring binoculars and a notebook for birds and wildlife.
A short drive away
Cleveland National Forest covers the Santa Ana Mountains above Foothill Ranch, across Orange and Riverside counties. It offers hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and camping.
For a bigger county park, O'Neill Regional Park is in Trabuco Canyon. It covers about 4,500 acres of oak and sycamore canyons, with chaparral on the slopes and creeks that flow in the wet season. More than 23 miles of trails serve hikers, bikers and riders. There are picnic areas, a playground, horseshoe pits and interpretive programs, and a campground with 79 sites, eight group sites and five horse sites.
Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park is another short drive. It is a 544-acre wildlife sanctuary with about five miles of trails along two seasonal creeks. A ranger station there has an interpretive classroom with displays on wildlife and history, and a one-acre native butterfly garden surrounds it.
