Things to do in Ladera Ranch: Neighborhood Parks and Big Open Land Nearby
A plain guide to Ladera Ranch's own parks, plus two large county parks and a historic mission within a short drive.

Ladera Ranch is a planned community in southern Orange County. It is not a city. It sits just outside Mission Viejo, in the foothills of the Orange County Saddleback, and covers about 4,000 acres. Construction began in 1999 on land that was part of Rancho Mission Viejo, once the largest working cattle ranch left in the county.
That history explains the feel of the place. It is mostly homes, schools and neighborhood parks, built on old ranch land. For bigger outdoor trips, you will want to head to the county parks and open land close by.
Parks in the community
Ladera Ranch has about 18 community parks, along with smaller pocket parks and green belts. It also has a dog park, a skate park and a private water park, and six neighborhood pools. The community is split into villages, and several have their own clubhouses.
These are everyday places: a swing set, a ball field, a walk after dinner. If you live here, they are the easiest outdoor time you will get. If you are visiting, treat them as a pleasant stop and plan your main trip elsewhere.
Caspers Wilderness Park
This is the big one. Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park is an OC Parks preserve of about 8,000 acres in the Santa Ana Mountains, near San Juan Capistrano.
The land is a mix of groves of coast live oak, California sycamores, seasonal wildflowers, running streams, river terraces and sandstone canyons. People come to hike, ride horses or mountain bike on its trails, and to watch wildlife along the way. There is a historic windmill and there are scenic overlooks. The picnic areas have shelters and fire rings, and there are horseshoe pits.
The park also has an interpretive center and a nature center. Guided walks and "critter talks" can be booked ahead, which makes it a good first trip for kids. It has camping too, open all year, including spots for RVs and for people with horses, and group sites for larger parties.
O'Neill Regional Park
O'Neill Regional Park covers about 4,500 acres in Trabuco Canyon and Live Oak Canyon. Trabuco Creek and Hickey Creek flow through it in the wet season. Coast live oaks and sycamores shade the canyon floors, and the hillsides are covered in cactus, wild buckwheat and sage.
There are more than 23 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. There are picnic areas, a children's playground, horseshoe pits and interpretive programs. The campground has 79 sites, eight group sites and five horse sites with corrals. The trails close for three days after rain.
Mission San Juan Capistrano
Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776 and was the seventh California mission. It is still a chapel and a museum. Serra Chapel, built in 1782, is the oldest building in California in continuous use.
You can see the ruins of the Great Stone Church, which fell in an earthquake in 1812, and the Sacred Garden, created in 1920. The mission is also famous for the cliff swallows that return to nest each year after a long migration from South America.
For families
Book a guided walk or "critter talk" at Caspers Wilderness Park.
Picnic and use the playground at O'Neill Regional Park.
Spend an afternoon at a neighborhood park or the dog park in Ladera Ranch.
Walk the mission grounds and look for the swallows' nests.
A short drive away
Everything above is in a neighboring area. Caspers Wilderness Park and the mission are both in or near San Juan Capistrano, and O'Neill Regional Park is in Trabuco Canyon.
Good to know
Ladera Ranch is a community, not a city, so there is no separate city park system.
Trails at county parks can close after rain. Check OC Parks before you go.
Check each park's own website for current access, facilities and rules.
